The First Strudel House of Pest

12th August 2011

We discovered this fabulous strudel restaurant in Budapest in 2008. And so as not to reinvent the wheel, the restaurant’s write-up on it’s own web page gives you a feel for the place.

‘The First Strudel House of Pest started its operation in 2007, uniquely in Hungary, in the heart of Budapest, in a historical building built in 1812, with the mission to preserve, hand down and popularize this real Hungarian tradition; the experience gained in preparing and consuming strudels in order to provide guests with gastronomic adventures that carry weight, history and values’.

I love how traditional this restaurant feels and of course I love the strudel. Strudel became well known and gained popularity in the 18th century.  It is most often associated with Austrain Cuisine but is also a traditional pastry in the whole area formerly belonging to the Austro-Hungarian empire.

The restaurant is decorated with old farmhouse antique kitchenware and displays black and white pictures of Hungarian woman making strudel many, many decades ago. The strudel is prepared and cooked in front of the customers in the main restaurant. It’s fascinating to watch.

I must mention the ladies toilet. As you can see from the picture, the glass sink shows a collection of ladies toiletries and old photographs from the early 1900’s.

I always associated strudel with dessert but the restaurant has a range of savoury strudel, which is excellent. In fact, if I had to choose, I would pick savoury over sweet even though I am a sweet person! On this occasion and on the basis it was research for my Blog we had both!
The chicken strudel with paprika and cream sauce was absolutely delicious and presented beautifully. It was a real hit with everyone.

We then had cottage cheese and cherry strudel, which came with a really hot chilli chocolate sauce, cottage cheese and apricot strudel and apple strudel, yummy!

If in Budapest, it’s a must visit. The food, the décor and the busy ambience make it a great experience!
